On June 19-20, 2021 the Skolkovo Foundation held the RED SOFT online hackathon for Linux developers. The award fund amounted to 1,000,000 rubles.
The jury consisted of developer experts who also acted as mentors. The partners of the event were Russian Hackers methodology, Yandex.Cloud servers, and the Dodo Pizza fast food restaurant network. More than 160 applications from 25 regions of the country were submitted for the hackathon. Twenty-three teams were admitted to the start, 12 of which made it to the finals. Participants were given access to servers with RED OS, one of the leaders on the Russian market, installed.
The teams had to solve one of four tasks: develop a tool for easy handling of basic RED OS settings, a prototype program for managing IS settings, a skin for RedExpert, or propose a solution for accessing internal enterprise resources directly without an external and intermediate server. At the end, the finalists had to deliver their projects.
"We spent 36 hours on challenges. Contestants were asking questions and communicating with mentors even at night. I observed the process, tried to assess the progress of each team, and communicated with mentors. There were people with different experiences and levels of knowledge among the participants. I was surprised by the variety of approaches and solutions proposed. I didn't think it was possible to approach the challenges in such a versatile way. I was certainly pleased with this. Mentors helped the participants in every possible way and got a lot of positive feedback after the end", Roman Simakov, member of the jury and Director of the System Products Development Department at RED SOFT, said.
The third place went to the DartNight team from Moscow. The participants developed an application to connect to the remote desktop of the RED OS on java through a python server.
RED SOFT hackathon scores
First place went to the Flying Cats team from Moscow. The students developed a tool to help them conveniently do basic configuration of the RED OS.
One of the team members said that he participated in the hackathon for the first time: "When a colleague forwarded me the link to the RED SOFT hackathon, I realized that dreams sometimes come true. I love teamwork and creating useful things, I wanted to meet people with similar interests and just have a cool time. I've had an interest in computers since childhood, and I'm proud to work in IT".
Second place was taken by a RED DYNASTY team of students from Murom, who developed the application. It combines a user-friendly interface, ease of use, centralization of functions, additional features, and is suitable for technical support operations.
